If you like bars and you happen to be in Phuket then you’re in luck. In fact it’s like your birthday, Christmas and Wedding day all rolled into one. Phuket bars are world renowned as excellent places to drink and hang out. Phuket bars alone are definitely worthy of a trip to Phuket.

One thing is for sure: Phuket bars are markedly different from their Western counterparts, and the organization of the bars will leave some confused. Never fear! I’m here to clear up some of this confusion.

The main area where most of the bars are situated is Bangla road. This road is around 600m and is wall to wall with restaurants, market stalls, bars and night clubs. There are some other areas where you will find some evening action, but Bangla road has to be one of the most impressive.

Most of the Phuket bars are positioned on side streets called ‘Soi’s. A Soi is just a grouping of related or unrelated establishments; they have names like ‘Soi Crocodile’, ‘Soi Lion’ and, interestingly, ‘Soi Eric’.

You can easily get lost in one Soi for an evening (or more); if you want a better taster of what Phuket bars are about then you would do better to do a little more traveling around the different types of Soi.

PHUKET has attracted its share of billionaires recently, and reports come to Phuketwan occasionally about the activities of the (super) rich and famous.

But staying a billionaire these days is almost as difficult as staying out of bars.

And the point is, as even left-wing agrarian economists will admit, having a collection of billionaires as fans does the island no harm at all.

Bill Barnett, the resorts and property specialist consultant, has offered a little speculation about the uberwealthy on Phuket in his new blog.

The Barnett list has been picked up by Property Report, and the introduction does have a somewhat 2007 approach that begins: ''Thailand's resort island of Phuket is fast becoming the place for the rich and famous in search of tropical island living coupled with great investment.''

Sure, sure . . .

The list of billionaires offered is topped by New Zealand's wealthiest brothers, Richard and Christopher Chandler with a fortune valued at more than US$ 2 billion and Canadian Robert Friedland,with Forbes reporting his net worth at US$1.4 billion.

Others on the almost-as-well-regarded Barnett-Property Report list include Hong Kong's Allan Zeman, considered to be the Father of Hong Kong entertainment zone Lang Kwai Fong: ''While his personal worth remains undisclosed he is highly ranked among Asia's most wealthy and influential businessmen'' and Formula One star Kimi Raikkonen, earning a reported US$ 44 million a year and ranked by Forbes as the fifth highest paid sports star and 26th highest paid celebrity.

The British Binatone founder, Gulu Lalvani, rounds out the list with his ''globetrotting celebrity and multi-million dollar personal fortune.''

We know of a couple of others who are frequent Phuket visitors and make the ''Australia's Wealthiest'' list: Bill Wavish and Solomon Lew, both products primarily of retail store fortunes.

Gulu Lalvani famously decided to build an artificial island for megayachts a few years back after a conversation with Bill Gates, who this year lost less money than Warren Buffett to retake his position at the top of wealthy lists worldwide.

We know less about the Russian billionaires, but reports say several big players have tumbled out of their Top 10 Rich List.

Some of them are bound to be Phuket fans.

The BBC reports that Indian businessman Anil Ambani has been revealed as the biggest loser on the 2009 Forbes World Billionaire list, losing $31.9 billion over the past 12 months.

Mr Ambani, who runs the telecoms and finance arms of the former Reliance Group, had been the biggest gainer in 2008.

India's billionaires saw massive falls, with Mr Ambani's brother Mukesh and steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal both seeing over half their net worth wiped out.

The 793 people listed lost 23 percent of total wealth on average over the past year.

The impact of the global economic downturn on people's fortunes was apparent, with 332 names from last year's list not making the cut, the BBC reported.

The huge losses almost make the billionaire's club sound like something you'd be glad to never have to join. Almost.

Thailand is not short of people who are extremely wealthy too, some with fortunes made in property.

Chaleo Yoovidhya, Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi and Dhanin Chearavanont made the latest world wealth rankings by Forbes.

Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhya led the trio with an estimated net worth of $3.7 billion, good for 151st place in the latest ranking, up from 260th last year. His estimated net worth fell from $4 billion in 2008.

Liquor and property magnate Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi was ranked 318th with a net worth of $2.1 billion, down from 307th place and $3.5 billion last year.

The magazine said Asian billionaires lost $447 billion overall as a result of the global crisis, with the number of Asians on the global list falling to 130 from 211 last year.

Region-wide, 28 of Asia's billionaires on the global list are from China, 24 from India, 19 from Hong Kong and 17 from Japan. Another 10 are from Australia, six from Malaysia, five each from Indonesia and Taiwan, four from South Korea, three each from New Zealand and Thailand, and two each from Kazakhstan, the Philippines and Singapore.

Phuket Nightlife Going Through Changes

Phuket nightlife takes on many different forms. Phuket is one of Thailand's top destinations and as such there is a diverse range of nightspots on the island. Although Phuket nightlife is not quite on the same level as in Bangkok, that doesn't mean that you won't be able to find somewhere to have fun.

Phuket nightlife is at its most lively in Patong. You'll either love Patong or you'll hate it. The bars are loud, the clubs are obnoxious and the streets are crowded. That being said, Patong is cheap and the bars and clubs stay open later than in other parts of Phuket.

Patong is famous for its nightlife. The center of the action is found on Soi Bangla, which is a hive of go-go bars, discos and stage shows. This is Phuket nightlife at its most seedy, but it can be a lot of fun if you go in the right frame of mind.

Generally speaking, the bars and clubs in Patong churn out hip hop and dance music hits. It can all be a bit predictable, so don't go expecting anything special.

Patong is also known for its girls. Yes, it's true, there are countless bar girls and sex shows in Patong, but the people of Patong make no effort to conceal these facts. Patong is what it is and it's best not to take the whole place too seriously.

Perhaps the most fun that can be had in Phuket is at some of the local clubs. Phuket nightlife is at its most authentic in the small Thai clubs, where you can check out some of the local bands. Phuket Town is probably the best place to sample some Thai-style clubbing.

Also in Phuket Town there are lots of pubs and beer bars and much less of the seedy side of Phuket nightlife.

There are plenty of other areas where you can go and party, but usually they aren't as busy and entertaining as in Patong or Phuket Town. There are a few exceptions scattered around the island in places such as Surin, Kata-Karon and Nai Harn.

The only area that Phuket really lacks anything in terms of nightlife is serious clubbing. There are a few Phuket clubs where you can hear cutting-edge music, but these are few and far between. However, it is possible to catch electro, techno, breaks, house and more in some Phuket clubs and bars.

Phuket could be a major clubbing destination in Southeast Asia, but the island has a long way to go before it can start competing with the likes of Singapore and KL.

For now, Phuket nightlife has enough depth to keep people entertained, but you feel as if there is more to come. The shining beacon of Phuket nightlife is that there is a great live-music scene around the island. There are lots of bands who can rattle out everything from rock and indie to jazz and blues. If you can get into it, there is a top indie scene in Phuket. Pick up some CDs in a local store to get a feel for the music.

Homeless man found dead in Phuket City

PHUKET CITY: A homeless man who has lived on the streets of Phuket City for years was found dead in front of a lumber yard on Thepkrasattri Road this morning.

Police have yet to identify the man, even though he was well known to local residents as an itinerant beggar.

The man’s body was found in a siting position with his head back on a bench in front of the Sa-sart Lumber Yard on Thepkrasattri Road southbound, opposite the Proton car dealership.

A carton of milk and two packages of junk food were found lying next to him.

Phuket Duty Officer Anek Mongkol estimated the man’s age at over 50 years and speculated that he might have suffered a stroke last night.

“He lived in Phuket for a long time and he always begged for food and money from people and temples in the area, ” Lt Col Anek said.

The man’s body was taken by Kusoldharm Foundation workers to the Vachira Phuket Hospital morgue, where it will be kept for a time in the hope that relatives will come and claim it.

Surviving holidays (mostly) intact

LAST December, a group of nine friends were on a minibus in Phuket, Thailand, when the vehicle collided with a motorcycle at high speed before swerving off-road and plunging into a pile of sand.

As smoke streamed from the bonnet, they were extricated and taken to the hospital just in time.

All survived by dint of chance - the outcome could have been graver had the van hit a tree or a house, or else exploded.

I was one of the nine victims.

The crash brought home the realisation that mishaps, when they occur, swoop in suddenly, randomly and unexpectedly - and they are not uncommon.

Just last month, another group of nine Singaporeans were also on a minibus that crashed - this time in New Zealand. The van careened off the highway and plunged down an embankment. Two passengers were airlifted to hospital.

There have been other, fatal cases. With Singaporeans making more trips abroad, the chances of everyone staying safe all of the time can be less likely.

This is not a call to stay at home. But before leaving, precautions that can prevent a bad situation from slipping into a worse one should be taken:

Travel insurance
The cost of this is negligible considering that medical and hospitalisation bills can run into the thousands, as it was for myself and some of my fellow passengers.

Getting the best treatment available - a key consideration when one is hurt in places with widely uneven levels of medical care - costs. Insurance offers peace of mind. Keep the contact number of the insurer and the insurance policy number on your body.

Embassy contacts
If you are hapless and distressed in a foreign land, it makes sense to let the nearest consular authorities know - they have the experience of helping many Singaporeans before you.

After the crash, my friends and I were taken to different village hospitals. The Singapore Embassy in Bangkok helped us circumvent the language barrier by calling the hospital staff on our behalf to find out how everyone was doing.

Later on, they linked us up with Silkair so we could depart on short notice upon being discharged from hospital.

So keep the phone number of the nearest Singapore diplomatic office with you - and register with the Foreign Affairs Ministry before leaving home.

Other measures one can take include:
* Noting the local emergency services numbers.

* If language can be a barrier, having the contacts of locals in the country who can converse in your language and theirs can come in useful.

* Keeping a spare phone, extra mobile phone batteries or a mobile phone charger on you. In the chaos that follows a mishap, it may take a while before you find a power point. In any case, a power socket is useless if one has been separated from the charger and travel adaptor in the luggage. This was the case for my friends and I.

Here or abroad, life is full of what-ifs, so it is impossible to create an exhaustive list of everything that can be done should things go wrong.

But if they do - and when they do - a mastery of what we can control can mitigate the fall-out of what we can't.

On Monday 16 March, local news included the new governor now in Phuket, plus all victims from boat accident recovered; then our Special report went to a Lifesaving Carnival for kids at Surin Beach Phuket. Later we had an interview with Aditya ‘Duke’ Assarat, the Thai Director of ‘Wonderful Town’ movie set in TakuPa, Phang Nga.

On Tuesday 17 March, local news included German Ambassador to Thailand’s visit to Phuket; then our Special report looked at sea gypsies on Ko Lanta island in Krabi. Later we had an interview with Anchalee Saisoontorn the lead actress in the ‘Wonderful Town’ movie set in Phang Nga. We were NOT on air Wednesday 18 - Friday 20 March due to staff absence/illness/nationwide program.

Bodies of M/V Dive Asia accident victims to be identified

Thai police are working to identify the bodies of five tourist divers who were trapped inside the M/V Dive Asia I dive boat when it capsizedPHUKET, Thailand (13 Mar 2009) — The body of missing Japanese dive tourist Hirotsuga Yuba was recovered by divers this morning, leaving only the Thai cook of the ill-fated Choke Somboon 19 unaccounted for after the vessel sunk during a storm on Sunday night.

The bodies of four European tourists who were trapped in their cabins when the vessel capsized were recovered by divers yesterday.

The divers had to use special equipment including "rebreathers" to extract the bodies from the stricken vessel, now resting at a depth of about 70 meters some 30 kilometers off the Phuket coastline.

Phuket Governor Preecha Ruangjan and the Royal Thai Navy Region 3 Commander, Vice Admiral Narong Tesvisal, were on hand at the Phuket Deep Sea Port when a Phuket Marine Police vessel arrived at 2 pm with the bodies of Mr Yuba and the four European victims caught inside the boat.

In a scene reminiscent of the 2004 tsunami disaster, the five bodies in black rubber bags were taken by Kusolharm Foundation rescue workers to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where they will be held until claimed by relatives.

Phuket Marine Police Lt Col Wanlop Puangpaka said two teams worked to recover the bodies of those trapped inside the boat, while a third continued to search for the last unaccounted person, the vessel's Thai cook Jumpa Somrak.

The search for Mr Jumpa would continue until he is found, either inside the vessel or at sea, he said.

Meanwhile, the husband, daughter and son of Austrian victim Gabrielle Jetzinger, whose body was spotted floating in the sea Tuesday morning, have already arrived in Phuket.

They are planning to hold a cremation ceremony at Wat Pratong tomorrow.

They plan to scatter Gabrielle's ashes over the waters off Phuket because she loved the island so much, they told reporters.

Back from tsunami disaster, Thai resort is a divine retreat

Phi Phi Don is a Thai island made famous as the shooting location for the 2000 film "The Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It is notable, too, for being the site of about 600 deaths during the 2004 tsunami.

Less famous than its neighbor Phuket, 20 miles to the west, Phi Phi still offers white sand, crystal clear azure waters and swank resorts. When we visited the island in February, there was little to remind visitors of the disastrous tsunami. But the resort map does note a new tsunami warning system and a memorial tucked away behind the resort.

Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort & Spa is upscale, (the second-most expensive on the island) in its own private bay on the east coast of Phi Phi Don.

The beach that runs along the front of the resort is half a mile long and dotted with beach bars and sun chairs. The resort boasts an infinity pool, gym, tennis courts, three restaurants, an Internet cafe, a spa and a launching point for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, fishing and any other island activities your mind (or wallet) can conjure.

When we were there, the weather was mostly perfect, as it tends to be in southern Thailand in the winter: lower 80s, humid but breezy and not a cloud in the sky.

CHECKING IN: Once at Phi Phi Island Village, we were served frothy coconut-milk shakes garnished with pineapple and orchids. We had to wait an hour and a half for our room to be ready (we arrived more than two hours before check-in), but the staff was apologetic and accommodating. We spent the time until we could get into our room poolside, which is not a terrible way to wait.

ROOMS: We stayed in the cheapest rooms offered, which are called Superior Bungalows. Next up on the ladder are the Deluxe Bungalows (about $175 per night), followed by Beach Front Junior Suites (about $300), which overlook the beach and have whirlpool tubs, and Hillside Pool Villas (about $415) with private swimming pools, among other amenities.

Our private bungalow, set on stilts amid the palm trees, had a lovely porch with two chairs for relaxing. Inside the double glass doors, a bamboo partition separated the bedroom and sitting area from the bathroom, dressing area and closet. Complimentary bottled water, coffee, tea and fruit were provided. The queen-size bed had fresh white linens and a mountain of fluffy pillows. A television offered all the necessary news and movie channels.

BATH: Apart from the waterfall shower head, the bathroom was unremarkable. The separate dressing area with a stylish wash basin, however, was notably chic. The coconut-scented toiletries, bathrobes, slippers and more towels than we knew what to do with left us squeaky clean and smelling like that shake we had upon arrival.

ATTITUDE: The guests were a mix of families and couples of all ages. The vibe is certainly more R&R than party hard.

The main reason people come is to relax in the spa—treatment prices range from 1,500 to 10,500 baht (about $40 to $300)—or to soak up the sun in the pool or the shallow and sometimes rocky bay.

KID-FRIENDLY: Absolutely. There is a slide at the pool, a play area with rocking horses and a seesaw. Also, the resort provides kid options in all of the activities and restaurants.

BOTTOM LINE: For a Superior Bungalow, we booked online through latestays.com and paid 5,500 baht ($157), which included breakfast.

Goa has been ranked at No 4 on a list of ‘10 best exotic places to take an extended holiday’ by international travel website TripAtlas.com.
According to the website, an ‘extended holiday’ is more than two weeks long. The website ranks Goa above renowned Asian holiday resorts as the island of Bali in Indonesia as well as Thailand’s exotic beach resorts of Phuket and Pattaya.
“Goa is a hot holiday spot for Indian and South Asian vacationers and is best known for its beaches, festivals and ancient temples. It was once a Portuguese colony and thus offers an eclectic mix of both east and west.
Calangute and Candolim are the most popular beach towns, but Goa’s capital Panaji is worth a visit, as is Ponda, a sacred site of Goan temples”, the website says.
Goa ranks above even European and US destinations like Florida, the Canary Islands off Africa and the island of St Martinique in the Caribbean.

Phuket Thai Cookery School

Last time I was in Thailand I never got around to taking a cooking class. It’s something I really wished I would have done, so this time around it was at the top of my list.

Tuesday morning we were picked up from our hotel and driven half way around the island to The Phuket Thai Cookery School. Sure, there were closer ones to our hotel, but most were more expensive, shorter, or just didn’t look as good. Plus the Thai Cookery School looked like it was the most hands on, which is what I was looking for.

We arrived on a beautiful, quiet and almost secluded beach. There were only 3 others in the class, so it was nice and small, although the facility is set up to handle larger groups. After donning our dorky hats and bright blue aprons, it was time to get started. First up was making a curry paste.

Each of us was set up with our own little station, complete with cutting board, mortar and pestle, and ingredients enough for one. We began by learning about each of the ingredients, and watching as we were shown the correct way to make the paste, and then we all set to work making our own. Grinding all the ingredients into a smooth paste actually took a lot longer than I thought it would, and I can totally understand why you’d use a blender if making a bigger batch.

SEVEN PEOPLE are reported missing after a dive boat sank in a storm off the Andaman coast last night.

The boat contained 31 people, the Royal Navy told Phuketwan.

Tearful survivors arrived back at the deep sea port on Phuket this afternoon on board a police boat after being rescued by a fishing trawler.

The captain of the sunken vessel, the MV Dive Asia 1, Preecha Sealee, 45, told Phuketwan that his boat had been overturned by one big wave off the Similan islands.

A dive company spokesperson said there were Germans, Austrians, Australians, Swiss, Swedes, Japanese and Thais on board.

This afternoon a Marine Police officer told Phuketwan that seven people were missing: two Swiss, two Austrians, one Thai, one German, one Japanese.

The Governor of Phuket, Dr Preecha Ruangjan, interrupted hosting a visit by a Royal princess today to order a helicopter search of the area in which the seven people are missing.

The Navy said they were contacted by the diving company at 8.30am today, when a search began.

The boat was named by the Navy as the MV Dive Asia 1.

A spokesperson for Dive Asia said today: ''I really can't tell you anything because we don't know anything.

The last we heard was at 10pm last night from the boat when everything was ok.''

The spokesperson was on his way to the deep sea port on Phuket to greet survivors.

The Similan islands made news earlier this year when tourists told of encountering Royal Navy officers holding Rohingya boat people under arrest on a beach there.

Andaman coast weather is normally quite calm at this time of year but the sudden squalls around Phuket are savage.

A storm that came out of nowhere drove One-Two-Go holiday flight 269 into the ground at Phuket airport in 2007, killing 90 of 130 people on board.

An email to Phuketwan this afternoon said: ''Dear All,

''With great sadness we have to inform you that our MV Dive Asia 1 sunk last night the 8th of March at around 11pm on the way back from Similan to Phuket.

''To our knowledge most of our guest and crew were able to get into the life raft and where picked up by a fishing boat around noon.

''Right now this people are being transferred to a Thai Police Vessel and are on the way to shore and should arrive soon.

''Six people are still missing and a search in the area is underway. Your support is greatly appreciated.

''At this moment we do not know the reason for the accident and we will keep you posted.

Getting a massage should be a thing to do when travelling Phuket. Massage in Phuket is a great way to relax after a long day of diving, touring or sailing.

Search operation continues after a body of a woman was found from the diving boat accident in Phuket while six more are still missing

Andaman News on NBT TV Phuket reported that Police patrol boat TOR 221 and the Royal Thai Navy Third Command along with staff from the charity foundation of Kusoltham brought to shore a body of a woman found about 20 kilometres away from the popular sunset view point of Promthep Cape on the south side of Phuket Island.

The body was believed to be one of the missing Austrian divers. The Phuket Governor Preecha Rungjan held a meeting with all related agencies to get up-dates, instructing search and rescue teams to speed up operations searching for 6 other missing people. Yesterday afternoon he went on a Navy plane to get an aerial view of the location where the diving boat is believed to be sunk. A so-called ‘war room’ acting as centre of command and information has also been set up at the provincial hall to provide any information and assistance survivors or families of tourist divers may need.

A representative from Dive Asia Company told the meeting that experienced scuba divers and special equipment have been sent out to assist the search. Benno Brandon, a Director of Dive Asia Co, told Andaman News earlier that the boat was well equipped and only 4 months old. He said it had proper radio and radar communications, but the accident occurred swiftly and in the dark plus a rainy storm or freak wind.

Officials from Austrian and Japanese Embassies came down to Phuket to look after their affected citizens. Some German and Austrian survivors requested to return to their countries and the Tourist Police have reportedly arranged with Immigration officials to facilitate convenient journeys for them. At 8am today, the Royal Thai Navy sent up a helicopter to continue searching the area. The report also said that on Sunday March 8th, a local fishing boat sank near Bon Island just south of Rawai, on the south side of Phuket. There were three people on board and one is still missing.

Thailand's largest exhibitor, Major Cineplex Group, is exploring new market opportunities for entertainment complexes in India, according to Somkit Tantadvanichkul, CEO of Major Cineplex Property Co, a subsidiary of Major Cineplex Group. Tantadvanichkul maintains that many Indian real estate firms have approached the company with land offers.

Major has already expanded its bowling business to India. A joint venture with PVR, the first 24-lane bowling outlet opens in April 2009. The company plans to spend at least US$28.6 million to open another 19 bowling outlets in India over the next three years.
Tantadvanichkul says that India is very attractive for investing in entertainment-related business. Major is considering opening entertainment centers similar to Major Cineplex standalone complexes in Thailand, he reveals.

"India has many multiplex theatres in retail centers, but few standalone cinema complexes, and they are unlike those in Thailand. The movie industry in India is also huge, with several thousand movies shown every year, worth over US$286 million," he notes.

Tantadvanichkul says the company is interested in developing entertainment complexes in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. He also describes Major's desire to build new projects in Bangkok, although retail complexes or multiples over 10,000 square meters are prohibited in the city under Bangkok's City Plan.

''If the Bangkok government relaxes this condition, there would be more opportunities to invest and it would be good for the country's economy'' he opines.

GDC Deploys in China
GDC Technology is moving its product forward again. The company recently won a contract to deploy 100 digital-cinema projection systems in Mainland China for the China Film Group Corporation (CFGC). The DCI-2000 Digital Cinema Integrated Projection System, which consists of GDC’s SA-2100 Digital Cinema Server and Barco’s DLP Cinema® Projector, will be used in the deployment.

“We have a long history of working with GDC dated back to 2002,” said Han Sanping, chairman and CEO of CFGC. “We are more than satisfied with the reliable performance of the 700 GDC servers that are already installed in cinemas. This new contract is just another show of our confidence in GDC as our trusted partner for digital rollout in China.”

Thailand Announces Ratings System
It was bound to happen: Thailand's Ministry of Culture will begin enforcing Thailand's first film ratings system beginning in May 2009.

"We should be able to enforce the regulations from May onward," Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch said in an interview with the Nation newspaper. "The system will have seven categories, rather than the more usual five used elsewhere. The two extra groups are for films that should be promoted on merits of cultures, arts or traditions, and films that should be banned for containing inappropriate content," Slukpetch said.

Among pics banned from Thai screens will be those that authorities believe offend the monarchy, threaten national security or national unity, insult religion, disrespect "honorable figures," challenge morals or contain explicit sex scenes.

The five other categories are similar to those used in rating systems elsewhere, including for general audiences, ages 13, 18, and restricted.

But the real question is how this will affect box-office. It will not. Like other laws in Thailand, after a period of implementation, the new regulations will likely be "overlooked.” If past experience is any indicator, the government will only use the law in cases where a point is to be made, and theatres told to implement the regulations will be more concerned with filling seats then asking for ID cards.

Phuket Fest Spotlights Taiwan
The second edition of the Phuket Film Festival, to be held June 4–11 at the international tourist destination of Phuket, Thailand, will feature a Spotlight on Taiwanese Film.

Taiwanese 2009 Academy Award Foreign-Language submission Cape #7 will top the lineup of award-winning films from the island nation. Supporting the films will be a delegation of directors, producers and actors and actresses coming into the Festival from Taiwan.
In recent years, a Korean culture wave of entertainment has swept across Asia. Close behind, however, is a new wave of Taiwanese "stars" turning out TV soaps and feature films that are winning awards at international film festivals.

The Taiwanese Embassy in Thailand will throw a gala reception at the Festival for the visiting delegation and other Festival VIPs on June 5.

Thailand Launches Comedy Fest
Speaking of festivals, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is moving forward with a new World Comedy Festival to be held in Bangkok in April 2009. The idea behind the event is to get people's minds off the economy and, most of all, off the recent political problems Thailand has had, including the closure of Bangkok's airports.

The Festival announced that it will screen 50 comedies from around the world.

Four bodies found in sunken boat in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Four bodies among the total six missing people from a sunken boat in Phuket were discovered on Wednesday afternoon, Police Lieutenant Colonel Wanlop Phungphaga, Inspector of Phuket Marine Police Station told Xinhua.

The six missing people, including five foreign divers and a Thai man, were the victims of the boat which sank in the Andaman Sea off Thailand's southern province of Phuket late Sunday night.

The four more bodies, which were discovered on Wednesday, have remained stuck inside the sunken boat, said Wanlop.

On Thursday morning, a search team consisting of three divers will attempt to take the four bodies out of the sunken boat, he said.

For the two other missing bodies, it is possible the bodies might also have been stuck inside the sunken boat, said Wanlop.

But the search team could not manage to search for them by Wednesday since they had limited time for searching, he said.

It is also possible the two other missing bodies might be swept away from the boat to other areas, he said.

On Tuesday, a combined-rescued team of the water police and navy of Phuket discovered the sunken boat, which is on the bottom at around 60-70-meter depth.

On late Sunday night, the navy base in Phuket was alerted by Dive Asia Company that its boat, which was carrying totally 30 passengers, failed to arrive at the Thachalong port in the city of Phuket province as scheduled.

The boat with the 30 passengers quickly sank after around two minutes of the immediate storm attack, said the sunken boat's caption.

The total 30 passengers included 19 foreign divers -- tourists and 11 staff of the boat. Among the 11 staff are three dive masters and eight boat workers, while some of these staff are foreign.

The combined-rescued team has worked to search for them since early Monday morning. By Monday, of the total, some 23 had been rescued and sent to a hospital after drifting on the sea.

Among the 23 rescued people, include eight Germans, eight boat workers, three Japanese, three Switzerlanders, and an Austrian.

And, on Tuesday, a female body was discovered by the combined-rescued team, but has yet to identify.

Thai AirAsia to add direct Hong Kong flights in June

PHUKET / BANGKOK: Thai AirAsia is planning to start direct flights between Phuket and Hong Kong in June and will push Phuket as a second hub in Thailand.

An executive of the budget airline said daily flights between the two cities would use new A320s, scheduled for delivery in June.

Phuket will be given more links with major destinations in Thailand and neighboring countries.

“We will beat rivals Silk Air of Singapore and Dragon Air of Hong Kong,” the executive said, noting that the number of tourists from Hong Kong to Phuket has been increasing as tourism recovers.

Phuket is crowded with tourists and Thai AirAsia flights to the island usually have full cabins, he said.

Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld said the carrier is focusing on second-tier cities in emerging markets such as China and India and plans to add flights to such destinations.

Average load factor during the first two months had reached 78%, up from 76% in the same period last year, he said.

The figures show a tourism rebound after numbers dropped sharply due to airport closures in November and early December, Mr Tassapon said.

Wat Sawan Kuha Temple (Phang Nga)

have been meaning to visit Wat Suwan Kuha (or Wat Suwannakuha; aka Wat Tham; also known as "that temple with a big Buddha in a cave") for a long time. I have seen many photos on the web, the temple is often visited by tours heading to Phang Nga for excursions including elephant rides or white water rafting, so we decided to go last weekend. It's only just over an hours drive from our house to reach Phang Nga town, and the temple is about 10km before the town.. but was curiously poorly signposted. On the way through the North of Phuket you pass rubber plantations, and there were a couple of local caged bird singing contests in progress. Heading over the Sarasin bridge out of Phuket the views are always great. One of these days I must head up there just to get some photos of the area.

The road from Phuket to Phang Nga is good, you pass a number of Buddhist temples and mosques on the road towards Phang Nga Town. I was surprised to find that the turn off to Wat Suwan Kuha is not marked (at least, not in English - the temple entrance on the main road is in Thai). There is a sign pointing to Raman Waterfall National Forest, so follow that! Wat Suwan Kuha is about half a kilometer along the road. There is plenty of parking and, as I say, there are tours visiting here. Quite a few "farang" visitors when we were there, but it was far from crowded.

Outside the cave you find a temple, stalls selling fruit, drinks and snacks and lots of monkeys who will steal your food given half a chance (I saw a monkey take a bag of nuts from a girl on a motorbike). Anyway, no need to buy food here, save your hunger for something better (see end of this page). Entry into the cave is just 20 Baht I am pleased to say.

Oh yes, monkeys... all over the place outside the cave. None inside. Of course people try to sell you food to feed the monkeys. Up to you. Anyway, if you have never been close to a monkey before, here's a place to get that monkey vibe.

Inside the main cave, the dominant figure is the large reclining Buddha. There are a number of other Buddha images too and a big Chedi which contains bones of the family who were the local governors about 160 years ago and who arranged for the construction of a shrine in the cave.

The big reclining Buddha is quite impressive. You can see it from all angles. My son felt the need to give a prayer - see photo below. You can climb some steps behind the reclining Buddha to a couple of small shrines, light some incense, say a prayer.

A cat came looking for a photo opportunity in the cave...

You can climb some steps past the big Buddha, enter another part of the cave. Oh, and I must mention there are bats in the cave too :) And some kind of cave dwelling birds. And a very amusing and totally pointless sign...

This was a nice day out off the island! Not in Phuket, but only an hour from home. We continued further along the road to see the Raman Waterfall.. and will go back sometime. There is a 2km nature trail with about 6 different waterfalls to see. After the temple and waterfall we looked for a nice lunch and found it - a place called Samchong Seafood, a little off the main road between Phang Nga and Phuket, a floating restaurant on a wide mangrove channel. We will be back here too and I will blog the restaurant very soon!

Phang Nga is the province to the north of Phuket and there is a lot to see here, and mostly it's within a day trip from Phuket. Wat Suwan Kuha could be combined with a ride around Phang Nga Bay and a nice seafood lunch. See you again soon!

Many Europeans who had visited the site were seen breaking down on their knees in front of the memorable stupa where the excavated skulls and bones were being displayed.
We really wanted to further our visit to some interior parts of Cambodia. However due to time constraint, we couldn’t make it. The distance between Phnom Penh and Ho Chin Minh City in Vietnam is about 216 Kms. A smooth drive can take around 2 hours from Phnom Penh to Ho chin Minh city. Visas needed to be applied at Phnom Penh only. At the moment Vietnam visas are not issued at the border. We need to apply for it one day ahead. However our team couldn’t manage it for Sunday and Saturday were off- day. And that was only the two days we had in hand and overstaying more days in Cambodia could amount to cancellation of our return flight to Kolkata. Though some of us had been to the Moc Bai and other adjacent villages towards the border to Vietnam, the team as a whole couldn’t visit the city of Vietnam.
Our return journey to Bangkok through the South coast of Cambodia was a memorable one. The more interesting part of the journey had been the long stretch of the coastal and the beautiful blue sea that danced gleefully in a spectacular distance. We are water -obsessed people and are ready to be romantic about with any form of water; be it pond or small river. Traveling overlooking the vast Sea in a hot summer day was so refreshing and the situation asked one to be more romantic and calls everyone to become a harmless soul rather than violent. The beautiful site chased away at bay the bed habit of animosity, hatred and dislike among one another that we carry along with us from Manipur and for sometime we breathed freedom. The best route to proceed to Koh Kong the border of Cambodia from Sihanoukville is waterways. There are about three fast boats that depart from Sihanoukville before 11 A.M daily. Koh Kong is an increasingly popular gateway to Cambodia from Hat Lek in eastern Thailand. Having the same name as its town, Koh Kong Island is the biggest island of Koh Kong’s coast. There are a number of unspoiled and less visited beaches around the island. This island visit is good for a one-day trip. The provincial capital is one of the few places in the entire province where we can find more tourists. Most folks pass through on their way to or from Thailand but due to transport limitations often they have to spend the night here. Unlike that border town to the north, Poipet, Koh Kong is a much more relaxed place with scenic beauties around .As with any border town there are the requisite mercenaries around, but no hassle around here as it was in Poipet. The dazzling golden water around him appeared as if it was a volcanic mountain in the middle of the sea with its lava sprung-out. The crimson ray spread over the horizon and twilight slowly enveloped the evening scene. Few shy-natured Cambodian girls peeped us by questioning telepathically who we are “Thais or Khmers” as they passed by. Nostalgic memories of my early teens attempted to whisk me back down the long forgotten memory lane in Manipur. Many evenings that have been bathed with the crimson rays had been passed by before my eyes in Manipur but never did a single thought occurred this way. Why did such a romantic mood sneak into me at this border point of Cambodia? May be a simple word to answer “When mind is free nature always takes its best role.”
Immigration officials at the border were so warm and friendly. We have crossed the border and applied for re entry visa into Thailand and soon we got it. The immigration officials in Thailand helped us to catch a mini van to further our journey to Bangkok via Pataya, the famous sea beach of Thailand. As the vehicle sped up, the silent highway gave our way towards Thailand. The sleeping mountain ranges seemed to have whispered ‘bye come back again’. In the death of the night people headed their own way to different destinations. Unlike Imphal Dimapur road or Imphal Moreh, our driver was never afraid of the gun totting element that might intervene our road to Bangkok. As we were penetrating through the silent night I could not but ponder why in Manipur things became too worse. Just beyond Motbung, the rest of the journey is purely in the hands of the God. This is all a spine chilling experience if you travel through the night. The one who is waiving Hi … by the driver widow is not there to cheer you up. If you don’t believe just open the window and just make ‘yourself’ his day. This is what happening in this tiny part of the World that we dearly called “A land belonging to Chingmi Tammi”. It is shameless robbing a stranger who passes through my corridor. On the other hand we saw hordes of departmental stores and show rooms that pressed into service till late midnight by the national highway. They seemed not to have bothered for a demand letter. They are not busy for ‘Waakat Mipham’ but used their precious time judiciously for promotion and developmental purposes only. But down here we are different creature. What is this? Are we all beasts here? When the neighboring South East Asian Countries scaled the sky, we are here just acting the ‘savage’. It is unfortunate and time calls for the godly men in the villages and city teaching the criminals the genesis of Adam and Eve with special reference to Manipur.
After a night halt at Pataya we have resumed our journey for Bangkok. The hollow Island in Pataya and people, who enjoyed life as if death would never befall on them, was a lovely site to look at.
We have reported on the Airport on the right time. The excess baggages made everybody unhappy. I have suggested them to be very cautious but the market was too tempting. Anyway we did it.
Reaching upon Kolkata, the immigration official on the desk gazed us through the thick glass lens as if we had done something wrong in the foreign countries. The customs officials kept watching us suspiciously as we passed through the green channel. Some unlucky fellow’s bags were checked but they didn’t find anything objectionable.
Back home. My daughter placed before me the bundle of newspapers with a cup of tea. Front pages contained news of ‘three killed’ and ‘four killed’. And lots more. Not a single day passed by without killing. Now the count begins how many of them killed during our absence in Manipur. Phuket’s Taj Exotica makes genuine start

The Taj Exotica is still planned for Phuket, despite the world economic downturn and a terrorist attack at the beautiful Taj hotel in Mumbai in November.

Hotel representatives called a meeting 11th February at the Bang Kontree Mosque community centre in Rawai to assess progress and inform interested parties about plans for the development.

As several glossy property-related magazines have noted, the Taj will probably set new standards in exclusive luxury accommodation on Phuket.

The Taj is to go on Koh Lon, an as yet undeveloped island surprisingly close to Chalong.

The 121 villas, to be set across 136 rai, could reach new record highs at a cost of $900,000 a key, according to those who have seen details of planning. That will be sumptuous accommodation.

But first, all the regular environmental impact surveys and discussions with local people have to be negotiated.

Phuketwan has visited Koh Lon many times and it´s a fascinating place. But the small island community of 80 families has been losing its young adults to the tourism industry.

So the modern pressures of earning a good income have left the island with elderly residents, and the very young. The local school has been under threat of closure for lack of students and teachers.

A resort of the right kind could be just what the island needs. It could bring back local villagers to local jobs, and reinvigorate local culture.

Wild pigs and bats are just a couple of the attractions that already make Koh Lon an ideal homestay destination, just 15 minutes away from Chalong Pier.

The villagers are friendly and keen to grow their own kind of tourist industry. Homestay suits them.

A coral reef nearby is still intact. So is the local Muslim culture, despite being so close to downtown Phuket.

Will the Taj change all that? The right resort could be a boon. But only the community can judge whether the Taj is the right resort.

In a brochure in the Thai language, handed out 11th February, the Taj management spells out its reasoning for choosing Koh Lon, and why it could work to everyone´s benefit.

Once work starts, the brochure says, building will take two years. (if you believe the breathless glossies, the Taj is about to open any minute.)

An Environmental Impact Assessment study is the first step. The brochure says Taj management is concerned to prevent landslips, waste water pollution in the sea and any other negative effects the project might have on the environment.

Major changes to the terrain are not anticipated. Waste from the construction project is to be transported to Saphan Hin, under an arrangement with the tessaban council of Phuket City.

Retaining blocks up to 2.4 metres high will prevent erosion into the sea, the brochure says. Tree-lopping will be limited and much of the area will retain its present foliage, the brochure says.

Shipping to and from Chalong will be done at high tide to avoid damage to coral, according to the brochure.

Benefits to the locals will come with jobs and more tourists to generate local income, and some of those benefits will stay on Koh Lon.

Project designers hope to be able to limit water traffic to a new pier on Koh Lon, the brochure says.

At the public meeting 11th February were representatives from Rawai tessaban Vichitt tessaban (both local councils) the Phuket Marine Biology Centre, the Royal Thai Navy, the marine transport office, leaders of the local people on Koh Lon and on Phuket, the Tourist Authority of Thailand and Taj representatives.

The firm that will make the environmental impact study was also represented.

Despite what the glossy magazines imply, no permission has been issued for construction to begin. Due process has to be followed before a timetable can be set.

About 50 people were at today´s gathering.

A representative from the Taj said that 80 percent of residents within a five-kilometre radius of the proposed project had expressed favorable opinions about it.

The result of the favorable survey has been passed to Rawai tessaban.

However, at the meeting, some local residents clearly within five kilometres of the project expressed surprise and said they knew nothing about the survey.

The Taj representatives said they would look to make the next survey more thorough and all-inclusive.

A proposal for a marina close to the Taj Exotica is being treated as a separate project. It will require its own environmental impact study.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hopes Japanese tourists will be encouraged to return to the Kingdom following Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's recent visit to the country, and is also making a concerted effort to lure Spanish travellers.

TAT officials have been travelling to foreign shores and conducting road shows in an effort to restore confidence among international tourists, whose numbers have dropped off in the wake of the worldwide economic meltdown. The state agency began its efforts some months ago with China, and most recently has focused its efforts on Japan - long one of the country's biggest tourism revenue sources - and Spain, an emerging source of tourist dollars.

TAT governor Phornsiri Manoharn said Thai officials have met with representatives of Japanese travel companies, tourism associations and government bodies to discuss a plan to restore tourism traffic between the two countries.

The TAT apologised to Japanese travellers for the many problems that have disrupted tourism in the Kingdom, Phornsiri said, and expected the effort to pay off with a rise in arrivals from Japan within the year.

The TAT expects the Japanese market to stay above the one-million tourist level this year, keeping it among the five biggest markets.

Last year, 1.2 million Japanese visited Thailand, generated revenue of Bt42 billion, the second-largest source of foreign tourism income following the United Kingdom. The top five destinations for Japanese travellers were Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Pattaya.

Japanese tourists spend an average of 7.5 days in Thailand, and 64.1 per cent of them return to the Kingdom at some point.

Many countries are vying for a slice of the Japanese tourist pie as Tokyo is encouraging its citizens to travel abroad under the Visit World Campaign, which was launched last year and will end in 2010, Phornsiri said.

The Japan Association of Travel Agents expects more than 20 million Japanese to travel as part of the campaign this year, up from 17 million last year.

To take advantage of the campaign, the TAT is focusing on three target groups; wealthy and middle-aged tourists; families; and youth travellers.

On February 24-26, the TAT will hold the Thailand Mega Familiarisation Trip, bringing 450 international travel agents, writers and reporters to Thailand for a briefing on the tourism situation.

The event follows the TAT's participation in Feria International de Turismo 2009, a tourism trade show in Spain held earlier this month. Four Thai hotel operators and 12 travel companies participated in the show.

The agency has taken its Seven Wonders of Amazing Thailand campaign to Spain, which is emerging as a valuable market for Thai tourism.

Tourist arrivals from Spain - particularly to Phuket - are increasing due to a rise in the number of direct charter flights, Phornsiri said.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hoped that Japanese tourists would return to Thailand following a recently visiting of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva while Spain also expected to recover soon.

TAT has been taking overseas trips and joining international road shows to restore tourist confident as part of dealings with worldwide economic meltdown. VDO Special - ‘Two island-One culture wedding’ held in Phuket on Valentines Day

Many positive and happy events took place across Thailand on Valentine’s Day. While the province of Trang in the Andaman Coastal region held underwater weddings, Phuket people were taken back in time for the ‘Two island-One culture wedding’ which was very special. Our reporter went along to capture the memorable atmosphere.

An old Phuket style groom’s procession using rickshaws started from the Phuket City office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand or TAT which represented the groom’s residence. The procession went along roads in old Phuket town heading for the Hongsyok family’s old colonial mansion, which represented the brides’ residence. This procession took place after the grooms and families performed a ceremony to pay respect to god, seeking their auspicious day for the wedding and hope for a blessing that day and in the future, with Phuket Governor Preecha Ruangjan and his spouse Piyatida, leading the ceremony. The governor hoped that the event would promote a cultural value among the younger generation. This was no ordinary wedding. It was the ‘Two island’s One culture’ wedding in which 8 couples from the island of Taiwan joined in the TAT’s invitation to get married in the traditional Thai Baba or Peranakan style in Phuket. They were joined by one local Thai couple, among many who are still fond of the traditional style of Baba wedding ceremonies, plus some 20 honeymooners as witnesses, and several young bridesmaids, girls and boys. The Director of the TAT’s local office in Phuket, Settaphan Buddhani, earlier explained more to us about the background of the special event:

Arriving at the bride’s residence, the grooms were greeted and welcomed in before a tea ceremony took place. During this ceremony red envelopes were presented to the couples. Settaphan explained that traditionally the envelop would have money in, but for this special occasion in an resort island of Phuket, the newly wed couples received many gifts for them to enjoy while staying in Phuket. Also performing in the ceremony were Taiwanese stars, Ms. Queenie Tai and Mr. Alan Huang, who were also impressed with the ceremony. Accompanying the group was a writer from the China Times Weekly in Taiwan, Danny Wen, who expressed his impressions about the wedding in Phuket: In the evening a celebration party was arranged at the old Thai Hua Museum in a nice and relaxed atmosphere where the newly weds were blessed and wished a prosperous future by the Phuket Governor. While the organizer was pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm about the wedding of participants and international press, local people were also happy to see the traditional ceremony. Traditional dance displays by Taiwanese and Thai artists, including a young group from British International School Phuket, was also put on stage to end the nice happy Valentines weddings.

Regular drivers should know how to perform this relatively simple operation, but for those who don't, get a lesson. You might also want to brush up on your oil-changing skills while you're at it. Too busy? Bring a friend who can do it for you; alternatively, check your insurance to see what kind of roadside service the company offers.
Automotive Alternatives: Typically a road trip is done by car, but if you don't have a vehicle of your own, and don't want to rent or borrow one, you can always hop on a bus. Greyhound has lines that cover the North American continent, and if you want to see the road without having to watch it, go Greyhound. There are numerous local bus lines to take you through interesting parts of different states as well, which you can find with a simple online search for "bus lines." Such a search on Google, for example, garners 59 million hits.
Get a Guide: And a map! Go to the bookstore, shop online, pop into the gas station liquor store, but get good maps of everywhere you plan on being. Phuket sales girls and my first decent clubbing discovery

Since I arrived in Phuket three months ago I’ve been desperately searching for some real nightlife. Recently, I’ve found a couple of places of note. One such place is Club Lime in Patong, located on the beach road next to Rock City and Club Andaman Resort.

I went to Club Lime for the first time on Friday night. What’s good about this place is that it pushes real dance music and the DJs are fairly decent. The music was primarily electro, with a bit of house and tech house to boot. It was real dance floor stuff, although Club Lime doesn’t have much of a dance floor. But still, there is space in front of the bar to dance.

The guys at Club Lime are looking to push clubbing in Phuket to new boundaries. Starting next month, there will be drum ‘n’ bass nights (which I might get involved in) and more DJs will be asked to play. Nakadia is due to play October 12, and after all the stick I’ve been giving her on the Bangkok Recorder forums, I’d like to see her play again.

The only thing with Club Lime is the people who go there. This is something that needs a bit of work. Hopefully a couple of articles I’m writing will drive some actual clubbers to the venue.

At the moment, it feels a bit like Bed Supperclub. Lime is full of old dudes and property sales girls. The sales girls in particular get on my nerves because they do nothing except take pictures of one another and rub their bodies on each other when everybody is looking. Sometimes they just pose and take their own pictures. I’ve never understood this.

One thing I’ve noticed about Phuket is that there are two types of people here: teachers and people working in real estate. Then there are the media people who write about the people working in real estate. If you enjoy talking about commissions and beauty salons then the sales girls will be happy to oblige. You wouldn’t believe how much money these girls are making as well; makes me think I should have been a sales girl.

Other than the sales girls issue, Club Lime is worth checking out.

My Public Transport Mode of Choice - The BTS Skytrain

bangkok ’s BTS sky train is a relatively fast and reliable way to make your way around town and to avoid the chaotic, traffic plagued roads below. As of now there are two sky train lines:

The Sukhumvit line has 16 stops and connects On Nut with Mo Chit, with en-route stops including Siam and Asoke (Sukhumvit). The Silom line has 7 stops and connects Sapan Taksin with National Stadium and its en-route stops include Silom aka Sala Daeng and Siam. The two lines connect at Siam.

The BTS Skytrain connects with its MRT Underground counterpart at Sala Daeng (Silom Underground), Asoke (Sukhumvit Underground) and Mo Chit (Chatuchak Underground). Most of my journeys on the BTS are between On Nut, Siam and Chong Nonsi where I get off and walk a bit further to my office.

The Skytrain fares are cheap starting from 15 baht to 40 baht which is still pretty much next to nothing. Tickets can be purchased from machines located at the stations. Unlike the MRT Underground ticket machines, a lot of machines for BTS tickets still only accept coins, not banknotes so you might have to change your note for coins at one of the information desks.

Back to the ticket machine, choose the zone your destination is in and it will automatically calculate the correct fare for you. You’ll be provided with a small cardboard ticket, roughly the size of a standard credit card to be inserted into a turnstile to access the platforms. Comes the end of your journey, you do the same to exit the platform but this time around it’s not returned to you.

Trains run from 6am morning to 12pm at night, are very frequently packed but thankfully are air conditioned. All upcoming stops are announced in both Thai and English.

If you live and work in bangkok and are tired of the shitty traffic here, I’d highly recommend adopting the BTS Skytrain as your primary mode of public transport.

There’s dozens of skyscrapers Towering the skies of Bangkok but by far the tallest and most impressive has got to be The Baiyoke Tower II which was opened in 1998 and is about 310 metres high.

It’s also the 26th tallest building in the world. In fact, there’s roughly 2060 steps from bottom to top and it would take you over an hour to reach the top on foot - so much, much easier by lift!

Architecturally speaking, the piling of the building runs a staggering 60 metres deep underground, easily the height of a 20 storey building. Go up the lift to the 77th floor and from there you will find another lift to the 84th floor for the revolving deck.

When you get there, you will understand why the viewing area is so attractive to both locals and foreign tourists alike. The views are simply amazing and up a little further is the wicked revolving deck that lets you enjoy the whole of Bangkok so far as your eyes can stretch.

Don’t forget to bring your camera as there’s some great photo oppornities and when you’re finished, there’s a nice little bar up there for you to sit, have a cold one and take in the great view.

Even though I have relatively little interest in conventional boxing , I’m somewhat passionate about thai boxing aka Muay thai. I remember when my mate visited me a while ago we really wanted to experience a vibrant evening at a Muay thai arena - he chose Ratchadamnoen and we went there together. At the time we had quite a bit of cash to spare so decided to splash out on ring side seats that set us back 1500 baht (£25/$45) each. But every single penny was well worth it because we got to see the action so frighteningly close.

muay thai boxing That said, you can alternatively opt to spend a bit less on cheaper seats starting at, say, 300-400 baht up in the cages which to us looked like a bloody wicked atmosphere amongst the absolute frenzy of gambling locals. Generally speaking, the evening starts at 8-9pm and goes through till quite late so it does make for quite nice after-dinner entertainment. By the ringside, there’s a couple of young lads serving beer as well as other refreshments but be warned they can be quite pricey by Bangkok standards.

The evening programme covers boxers of differing weights and skills, though all the lads are strikingly fit and have muscles in places you might not think possible. Prior to the fighting, both boxers circle the ring in a mesmerising ceremonial dance before kneeling down to pray. There’s also a local music group that drums a somewhat hypnotic beat throughout the night. Even if you’re not a big fan of violence, I’d still urge you to attend - this is a major part of thai culture and tradition. And while Muay thai may have a brutal image, most fighters have nothing but complete respect for one another and it is quite rare for kicks to go anywhere above shoulder height but when they do you can easily expect some serious pain!

By far the best place to go in Bangkok for any sort of computer-related products is the five-storey Pantip Plaza in Pratu Nam, near the impressive Central World shopping mall. Prices are predictably cheap and the range rather extensive, though not that many vendors speak an awful lot of English.

And while there is a huge variety of computer-related products for sale on the cheap, Pantip is most associated with the massive amount of pirated software available. A lot of them are located in booths right next to factor outlets. For some reason, they just co exist in perfect harmony. There are literally tonnes of different vendors shifting hacked versions of software of all sorts and they’re usually the most up-to-date too.

When in Pantip, haggling over price is what they call a time-honoured tradition. Last month I went to pick up a 160GB external hard drive that finally cost me a mere 2000 baht (£35/$65) and, yes, it did come with the box and 3-year warranty.

And to those of you highly sensitive gits, don’t be offended by the guys approaching you saying “CD” (”seedy” more like) in a bid to sell you pornos. They do this to virtually everyone regardless of your horny look or not. Obviously, they’re just doing their job so it’s best just to ignore them unless you want to add some new titles to your fast-growing collection!

On soi Thonglor there are a couple of cool bars and clubs that are worth spending your evening in. I have been to most bars in this area but by far the most established and notable has got to be Song Salueng (สองสลึง) bar on soi 21. And here’s my review:

The club: one beautifully, uniquely designed hall with rather neat table settings that are also relatively easy to navigate your way through. Upstairs on the balcony, there’s a couple of comfy couches perfect for those unable/unwilling to compete for limited dancing space downstairs. There are two bars on both ends of the club with quick and reliable service. Outside there’s a long array of equally comfy seats and tables with a lovely view if you fancy a ciggy or some fresh air.

The music: as the bar is a single two-storey room with no alternative choice of music other than what is offered, you have to most of the time make do with live bands playing all the usual Thai tunes but hip hop hits are introduced once every hour while the bands take turns so make the most of them before the loud mouthed lads return to the stage.

The crowd: mostly youngsters but a fair number of people of working age too. Westerners are something of a rarity so expect surplus attention here. Girls are lovely by Ekamai/Thonglor standards and sometimes even inviting so join in with them and good luck.

The price: Whiskey (Red Label 1 Litre) - 1600 baht. Mixer - 50 baht. Beer (Heineken) - 200 baht

If you’re out quite a lot in Bangkok you probably agree with me that the closing hours are such a pain in the arse for us party animals and there ain’t much we can do about it but moan, moan and moan. Fortunately enough though, there’s a couple of after hours clubs that remain open until as late as 5 am in the morning for those of you hardcore clubbers.

As a fun-loving young man, I enjoy partying to bits but after closing hours usually get too knackered to carry on elsewhere. But I do often get starving having spent hours boozing and bopping the night away and when I do, I usually end up finding somewhere to eat with my mates. There are plenty of late night eateries in Bangkok but by far my most favourite has got to be the wicked Huay Kwang night market, about 5 minutes away from Ratchada/RCA and 10 minutes from Sukhumvit (with no traffic).

In a nutshell, it’s a night market packed with clothing, jewellery, fake stuff stalls and a couple of worthwhile restaurants. I’ve been to two and the food served there is not bad at all. It’s a bit busy but surely worth it as once you’ve sat yourself down you’re bound to be surrounded by beautiful fellow diners who offer an amazing view and make the already good meal even better!

Today I’ve been out to do a bit of grocery shopping on metered taxis so I thought it’d be interesting and useful to those of you new to Bangkok to offer my take on one of the most popular modes of public transport in Bangkok. So here it is:

You’ll have little difficulty finding a metered taxi in Bangkok - they’re absolutely everywhere! The majority of them are bright coloured in pink, blue, yellow etc. so you surely can’t miss those ones. Just look for the ‘Taxi Meter’ sign and signal to the eager driver and if the taxi is free he will stop and pick you up.

Thanks to the chaotic nature of Bangkok’s traffic, you’re unlikely to get too far too fast in a metered taxi. If you happen to be close to an Underground or BTS skytrain station, I’d then recommend you to use one of those as your usual means of public transport around town, otherwise I’d recommend metered taxis over tuk-tuks any day of the week. Tuktuks are good fun for a 1 off trip but you really can’t rely on them to get you where you’d like to go without a time-wasting stop at a shop, where the driver typically earns nice commission.

As a rule of thumb, the meter starts at a mere 35 baht when you’re picked up. The fares of course are bloody cheap relative to Western standards, with a journey of a couple of kilometres costing between 100-200 baht. In fact, the seemingly long journey from central Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi airport ought to cost no more than 300 baht.

In addition, most taxi drivers in Bangkok are extremely friendly so you might like to make friends and learn a bit of Thai from them too. A few of them can also be more sophisticated than you may think and have some great stories and views to share so next time you get stuck in traffic in a metered taxi you know exactly what to do!
